Abstract
The resurgence in mathematical crystallography motivated the formation of the IUCr Commission on Mathematical Crystallography, as well as this virtual special issue ofActa Crystallographica Section A. This foreword describes some of the current activities of the Commission and introduces the articles in the special issue.
