Abstract

Annotation The magnetic susceptibility and the Faraday effect of single-crystal DyAlO3 samples have been studied within the temperature range 78–300 K along the crystallographic axis of "easy" magnetization - b of an orthorhombic crystal. The Faraday rotation have been extracted from the temperature and spectral dependences of the rotation angles of the major axis of the polarization ellipse of light Θ measured in the wavelength range 440–750 nm. From the linear dependence of the Verdet constant V on the magnetic susceptibility of the DyAlO3 crystal at the wavelength 506 nm, the value of the "paramagnetic" Verdet constant C of the dysprosium orthoaluminate have been calculated. Its value was (7.0 ± 0.3) × 103 min / cm × Oe, which is several times higher than the corresponding value determined from measurements of the Faraday effect in the rare-earth dysprosium garnet-aluminate. It have been found that the contribution of the excited d-states of the Dy3+ ion in the low-symmetric DyAlO3 crystal field is one of the reasons for the change in the magneto-optical activity of Dy3+ ions in the orthoaluminate structure.
