5. Gold-coated substrates were prepared by vacuum deposition of a 5 nm titanium layer followed by a 50 nm gold layer on silicon (100) wafer. Clean gold-coated silicon substrates were immersed in hydroquinone-terminated alkanethiol in ethanol for 18 h at room temperature and then rinsed in clean ethanol and spin dried.
