2. The chemical name taxol was assigned to compound1by Drs. Wall and Wani. The name Taxol was subsequently registered by Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceuticals as the trademark for their pharmaceutical formulation of taxol, and the generic name paclitaxel was assigned to the chemical compound of structure1. Because of the historical nature of this review, the name taxol will be used for compound1, since all publications before about 1994 use this name for this compound. No infringement of the Bristol-Myers Squibb trademark is intended by this usage.
