Bousfield and Locher (eds.) will interest the more theoretically inclined as well as data-oriented researchers. The papers draw on numerous activity types to demonstrate the relationship between impoliteness and power and, in particular, to show how impoliteness can be seen as ‘an exercise of power’ (Bousfield and Locher 2008: 8). The edited collection also contains papers which seek to better define im/politeness: often by first determining what might constitute politic behaviour. These researchers reject straightforward definitions in favour of emphasising that, in the final instance, judgements of im/politeness depend on various sociopragmatic factors: most notably, the setting, the relationship between participants and their particular cultural and interpersonal preferences. The edited collection thus serves as an excellent introduction to the various research paradigms associated with impoliteness-related research.
