Multiple Benefits of Videotaping for Teaching Skills in Communication

Abstract

The myriad technical advantages of videotaping presentations are identified, including the opportunity to: edit, use graphics, perform location taping, include interviews with those who can provide unique information and perspective, store taped work which has archival value, evaluate and field-test an effort prior to its formal presentation, etc. Educational benefits are also provided to those involved in the development of a videotaped presentation; for example, videotaping allows one to improve his/her communication skills with increased self-confidence and enthusiasm while reducing one's anxiety during a formal presentation. Minimal financial investment is required in order to acquire these benefits. The use of this emerging technical capability for effective communication can be expected to increase in the academic, industrial and commercial worlds.
