Abstract
This article reports on an abandoned study, yet the data consist of authentic observations. The analysis unfortunately remains conjecture. In an effort to study the potential benefits of psychotherapy to terminal cancer patients, a preliminary feasibility study was carried out which portrayed the physicians' attitudes toward their dying patients as reformed and progressive. In addition they expressed enthusiasm for participating in such a study. However the keen interest originally shown by the physicians did not translate into a tangible research effort in spite of an active pursuit by the investigator over a period of more than three years. The inevitable issue became the analysis of the underlying dynamics of the discrepancy between asserted intent and actual behavior. The issue is approached from a psychological perspective, examining repercussions of working conditions, defense mechanisms, social pressures, and status hybris. No conclusions are offered other than caveats for possible successors.
