Abstract
The present day computers represent a powerful tool for education. However, computer-based instructions are still lacking in mapping and map-related disciplines while textbooks with ancillary software have become commonplace. This article addresses generic problems and issues regarding the integration of computers into teaching for pedagogical and professional benefit. It describes the meaning and impact of computing from the perspective of cost-and-benefit concerns, appropriateness of technology, effective implementation, and adequacy of existing resources. Although the primary tradeoff between conventional and new methods of instruction is cost-effectiveness, there seems a greater need to redefining pedagogical aims and understanding the benefit of visual stimuli, especially maps, in an instructional setting.
