The Perceptual Arc: Unraveling the Mysteries of Perception

Abstract

Based in science, perception is viewed as an arc in which energies from objects in the environment are brought into the mind. Phenomenal objects are then “projected” as a purely mental process and perceived as being in the environment. The concept is supported by the writings of Locke and Kant. There are profound implications for the understanding of consciousness and subjective reality. In addition to the perceptual arc, there is brief peripheral discussion of the creation of qualities, synecdoche, and aspects of brain physiology leading to consciousness.
