Abstract
This paper reviews current knowledge about the extent of the misuse of prescription and non-prescription drugs by the elderly; and discusses factors contributing to the problem, particularly the role of information and non-medical individuals who may influence medication behavior. It also addresses the role of health professionals in the problem and its amelioration; and reviews the success of attempts to reduce the misuse of drugs. Finally, this article suggests fruitful directions for the health care community to pursue for educating and counseling elderly patients about drug use and misuse.
