Abstract
This article concerns recent approaches in North American historical archaeology to studying issues of ethnicity. It begins with a consideration of fundamental concepts and definitions. Next, discussions regarding the nature of archaeological research on ethnicity are offered. Consideration is given to ethnic groups, ethnic settings, and ethnic topics studied by archaeologists. It is suggested that certain groups, settings, and topics are emphasized while others receive little attention. The paper concludes with the presentation of a set of recommendations for future work.
