Abstract
The years 1994–96 are marked by a series of golden jubilees: the first electron magnetic resonance experiment at Kazan (Zavoisky, 1945); nuclear magnetic resonance at Harvard (1945) and nuclear magnetic induction at Stanford (1945); ferromagnetic resonance in Oxford (1946); and microwave spectroscopy of gases (Oxford, and at several laboratories in the USA, 1944–45). These were commemorated by four plenary lectures at the 28th Colloque A.M.P.E.R.E. (Canterbury, 1–6 September 1996).
