Abstract
The segment borders in the abdomen of
Oncopeltus
(Hemiptera) are both elements in the integumental pattern and compartment boundaries. When regions of the cuticle and epidermis are extirpated, and the free edges joined together, intercalation occurs. This intercalation always takes the shortest available route along the ‘segmental wavelength’, and can result in the formation of an adventitious segment boundary.
