Abstract
In sister taxa comparisons, there is a significant, positive correlation between the rate of evolution of the
rbc
L chloroplast gene within families of flowering plants (angiosperms), and the number of species in those families. We briefly discuss alternative evolutionary scenarios which may have generated this relation between species diversification and molecular evolution in flowering plants.
