Abstract
The thermal decomposition of acetone and that of acetaldehyde are homogeneous reactions which take place with measurable velocity in the range 400-600° C. The decomposition of acetone is a unimolecular reaction, that of acetaldehyde is bimolecular. The contrast is rather remarkable. Simple organic substances of this kind seemed worth investigating further because the number of homogeneous reactions at present known is rather limited, and the study of these reactions is of the greatest importance in the attempt to construct a general theory of the mechanism of chemical change.
