Abstract
On his father’s side E. D. Adrian was descended from a Huguenot refugee, Richard Adrian, who fled to England from France or Flanders after the massacre of St Bartholomew in 1572. There had been Adrians living in England since the thirteenth century and it seems possible that Richard Adrian was attracted to England for that reason. This suggestion was made by E. D. Adrian’s father, Alfred Douglas Adrian, in a private history written for his family. The genealogical tree reproduced on the opposite page summarizes what is known about E. D. Adrian’s ancestry on the paternal side.
