Abstract
Charles Robert Harington won distinction during his lifetime by his personal contributions to biochemistry, his directorship of the National Institute for Medical Research and the widespread confidence that he inspired among scientists and administrators alike by the natural integrity of his judgement. He was born on 1 August 1897. His father was the Reverend Charles Harington, vicar of Llanerfyl in North Wales, a younger son of Sir Richard Harington, the eleventh baronet, of Ridlington. His mother was Audrey, daughter of the Reverend Robert Burges Bayley. Harington was thus a member, by unbroken descent, of the senior surviving branch of one of the most ancient families of England.
