Abstract
At the Empire Scientific Conference of 1946 the need for reexamining scientific information services was expressed and the Royal Society was invited to give its attention to the problem. This invitation was formally endorsed by the British Commonwealth Scientific Official Conference of 1946. The Council of the Society decided that the conference should take place in the summer of 1948, and in November 1947 Council appointed a Committee under the joint chairmanship of Sir Alfred Egerton and Sir Edward Salisbury to advise on the preliminary organization of a Scientific Information Conference. The first meeting of this preparatory committee took place on 10 December 1947.
