Abstract
Small quantities of nitric oxide inhibit the decompositions of various organic substances, an effect which was first observed and studied for diethyl ether (Staveley and Hinshelwood 1936
a, b, c
; Hinshelwood 1936). The rate falls rapidly with increasing concentration of nitric oxide, reaching a definite limit at a pressure of the order of a millimetre and remaining constant up to about 20 mm., where an independent catalytic action of large quantities of nitric oxide begins to be apparent.
