flames with and without small proportions of added calcium, strontium and barium are reported. These results, together with earlier observations on alkaline earth metals E in flames, are interpreted in terms of a set of chemical reactions involving the gasphase additive species E, EO, EOH, E(OH)

The interpretation offered differs somewhat from those of previous workers, particularly with regard to the significance of non-equilibrium effects, but nevertheless provides an overall description of alkaline earth flame chemistry consistent with all available observations. Thermochemical data are tabulated for key reactions.
