Abstract
From measurements of the hyperfine structure of 33 lines in the visible and near infrared regions of the arc spectrum of
129
Xe the doublet splittings, and hyperfine structure constants,
A
, have been found for 27 levels in this spectrum, 14 of which have not previously been measured accurately. Measurements of the hyperfine structure of three lines in the near infrared spectrum of
131
Xe have yielded the hyperfine structure constants
A
and
B
of three levels of this spectrum, and have enabled an accurate spectroscopic determination to be made of the ratio of the magnetic moments of the nuclei of
129
Xe and
131
Xe; measurements of partially resolved hyperfine structure of four more lines in the near infrared have enabled values to be found for the hyperfine structure constants
B
for four more levels. The experimental values for the hyperfine structure
A
-constants of the levels of
129
Xe are compared with the values calculated by Liberman (1969, 1970); the agreement with the experimental values is excellent for levels with the configurations 5p
5
6s, 5p
5
6p and 5p
5
7p. The average of the ratios of the
A
-constants of levels of
129
Xe and
131
Xe is –3.37
8
±0.01; this differs by less than 0.003 from the ratio found from nuclear resonance measurements of the structures of the levels 6s3/22 of
129
Xe and
131
Xe (Faust & McDermott 1961).
