Abstract
A simple argument from relativistic kinematics is used to obtain the transverse displacement of a light ray propagating through a transversely moving dispersive medium, as observed in the experiment of Jones (1972). The displacement for a slab of medium of thickness
t
moving with speed
v
is found to be
vt(n
g
—nq
-1
)/c
where
c
is the speed of light in vacuo and
n
g
and
n
q are respectively the group and phase refractive indices of the medium.
