3. The cryogenic radiometer was based on ESR (electrical substitution radiometry). This employed a germanium resistance thermometer to measure the temperature rise of a thermal detector relative to a constant-temperature heat sink held at 2 K. If these are subjected to alternate optical and electrical heating cycles controlling the electrical input so that the detector temperature rise is the same for both sorts of heating then the thermal power can be considered equivalent to the electrical power.
