Abstract
Howard H. Rosenbrock was a major figure in automatic control. His career started in R&D in post-war industry, working on diverse challenging applications. He then moved to research in universities, where he made fundamental contributions to algebraic systems theory and to control design methods assisted by interactive computing. He established the Control Systems Centre at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, which became a centre of excellence under his leadership.
