Abstract
The paramagnetic susceptibility
X
of some of the transition elements in the temperature range 20 to 1800 °C has been measured. The values of
X
at 20 °C in 10
-6
e. m. u. /g are: Ti, 3.36; Zr, 1.33; Hf, 0.38; V, 5.64; Nb, 2.3; Ta, 0.85; Mo, 0.82; W, 0.29; Re, 0.35; Ru, 0.34; Rh, 1.03; Ir, 0.14; Pd, 5.4; Pt, 0.97. It was found that the generalization proposed by Kriessman & Callen (1954), that the temperature gradient of
X
alternates in sign in successive columns of the periodic table, is not supported by the results of this work. The results are discussed in relation to the band theory of metals and some generalizations about the
d
-band forms of the three transition metal series are made.
