Abstract
The kinetics of decay of the triplet states of naphthalene and anthracene in the vapour phase have been studied by flash photolysis and kinetic spectrophotometry. The decay is accounted for entirely in terms of second order triplet-triplet quenching which occurs with nearly unit collision efficiency. The rate of decay is independent of the pressure of added argonor carbon dioxide and of temperature. Quenching by oxygen is approximately one hundred times slower than the collision rate.
