Abstract
The thermal magnetoresistance of nominally pure and Cr-doped MgO has been investigated between 0·4 and 4·0°K. Lines, i. e. maxima in the magnetoresistance, are believed to be due to resonant scattering by Fe
2+
ions and by an unidentified ion with
g
~ 1·7 which may possibly be Mn
3+
or V
3+
. By making certain simplifying assumptions about the nature of the phonons responsible for the heat current, values of
G
11
and
G
44
for Fe
2+
have been obtained which are not inconsistent with those determined in other ways. In the Cr-doped samples, an additional line thought to be due to Cr
2+
was also observed. The magnetoresistance of all the specimens is very sensitive to the concentration of Cr
2+
ions present which determine the form of the spectral distribution of the heat current. Two types of anisotropy have been identified in which the magnetoresistance depends (i) on the angle between the heat current and the field, and (ii) on the angle between the field and the crystallographic axes.
