The dynamic behaviour of mild steel in pure flexure

Abstract

This paper describes some experiments on normalized mild-steel rectangular beams tested in uniform flexure at various rates of loading from static tests to tests in which the yield stress was developed in the extreme fibres in 5 ms. It was found that the full plastic moment of resistance agreed fairly closely with that which would be predicted on the basis of results from tension and compression tests. It was also found that the upper yield stress was enhanced at increased strain-rates to such an extent that the dynamic elastic moment of resistance was greater than the dynamic full plastic moment. Repeated tests were also conducted on a number of specimens in order to examine the influence of dynamic Bauschinger effects and residual stresses on the behaviour.
