Abstract
The co-ordinate system of King-Hele is refined and used to solve the equations of motion of a near-earth satellite, neglecting all perturbing forces except the oblateness of the earth. Besides the better-known effects (regression of nodes, precession or recession of perigee) it is found that the maximum latitude of the subsatellite point varies, and the rate of regression of the node varies by as much as 20% on either side of its mean value (when
e
= 0.2). Validity of the analysis is not restricted to small eccentricities.
