Abstract
A search for electronic Raman transitions in the Pr
3+
ion in PrCl
3
has yielded ten lines, which have been assigned as transitions from the ground Stark level of the
3
H
4
state of the free Pr
3
+ ion to: (i) three other Stark levels of the
3
H
4
state ; (ii) five Stark levels of the
3
H
5
state ; and (iii) two Stark levels of the
3
F
2
state. The frequencies and the polarizations of these lines are in agreement with the known energy levels of the Pr
3+
ion. During the course of this work the frequencies of five of the six Raman active vibrational modes of crystals of both PrCl
3
and LaCl
3
were also determined. Only one
A
g
mode escaped detection.
