Abstract

electron theory is studied from a field-theory point of view and an extension of the Hückel theory is derived, which takes into account intra-atomic correlations. Explicit solutions are given for particle and hole states in even alternant hydrocarbons. Quasi-particle energies and interactions determine the excitation spectrum, and calculations on benzene exhibit fair agreement with observed transition energies and suggest a reconsideration of the current symmetry assignments.
