Abstract
It is shown that lead tetraethyl markedly increases the auto-ignition delay in explosions of oxygen with
n
-heptane or
iso
-octane, using various sensitizers. During the induction periods of explosions containing lead, the gaseous PbO band system occurred strongly, but there were no indications of the separation of a solid phase. A possible mechanism was suggested whereby gaseous PbO removed chain carriers by reversible oxidation and reduction reactions. The temperatures during the induction period were evaluated from a study of the variation of the intensity of the PbO spectrum with time.
