Cytochrome oxidase

Abstract

It was shown by Ehrlich (1885), Vernon (1911 a, b ), Battelli and Stern (1912) and others* that indophenol oxidase or indophenolase is one of the most widely distributed oxidizing enzymes found in cells of aerobic organisms. The presence of this enzyme is usually recognized by the property of cells to oxidize “ nadi” reagent (dimethyl- p -phenylenediamine + α-naphthol) to indophenol or p -phenylenediam ine to a di-imine.
