Abstract
Enthalpy changes on dilution of human red blood cells with buffer solutions over the pH range 6 to 8 at 30°C have been measured by microcalorimetry. From the results a value has been obtained for the enthalpy of ionization of the histidine residues in intracellular haemoglobin which is close to the enthalpy of ionization of the imidazole group of histidine in free solution. It has been found that significant enthalpy changes occur when red cell suspensions are diluted with their supernatant liquid which may be indirectly attributed to increased ion concentrations in the interacting diffuse double layers surrounding the red cells in relatively concentrated suspensions.
