Abstract
It is often assumed that the control of gene action in eukaryotic systems involves the same general principles as those that have been implicated in the homeostatic adaptation of micro-organisms. Whether such a unitary view is justified is, for the time being, impossible to assess. Unitary concepts are in general both fruitful and dangerous but a comparison between genetic control mechanisms in micro-organisms and in higher forms remains at any rate of invaluable importance from an evolutionary standpoint.
