Abstract
Extracellular connective tissue fibrils have been observed with the electron microscope in the locust auditory ganglion. They show a similar macroperiod length to that of rat-tail collagen observed under the same conditions. They show a series of bands of varying density in each macroperiod and the bands are arranged in a polarized, i. e. asymmetric manner like those of collagen, but not all the positions of the bands coincide with those of rat-tail collagen. It is suggested that the absence of the tracheal system with its supporting function in the auditory ganglion is related to the presence of the collagen-like fibrils.
