Hitting collisions between ions and linear molecules having a quadrupole moment

Abstract

Rate coefficients k c ( j , m ) for hitting collisions between ions of charge e and linear molecules of quadrupole moment q are calculated by the semi-classical adiabatic invariance method. The main results are presented in the form of two graphs of c / k L against √ S , where c is the thermal average of the rate coefficients k c ( j , m ), k L is the Langevin rate coefficient and S is a certain dimensionless parameter. The values of c for eq negative are greater than those for eq positive. A comparison is made with the measured rate coefficients of some proton and deuteron transfer reactions.
