Abstract
The rotation of the plane of polarisation of light in a magnetic field is due to the velocity of propagation of light circularly polarised in one direction being different from th at of light circularly polarised in the opposite direction. The Zeeman effect is due to a difference in the frequency of vibration of these circularly polarised waves. W hat is required is to connect the frequency of vibration w ith the velocity of propagation.
