Abstract
A scanning microscope is described which is capable of a point resolution of 0.5 nm. We have demonstrated that it can produce the same kinds of micrographs as a conventional microscope. However, by using several detectors to produce signals corresponding to different groups of transmitted electrons we are able to produce an image contrast closely proportional to
Z
, the atomic number. Such a system is very promising for the study of stained molecules.
