Abstract
The absolute intensity of the vibration absorption band of nitrous oxide at 4⋅5
μ
has been determined. The procedure involves the measurement of the integrated band area under conditions of complete pressure broadening caused by the addition of excess nitrogen, and extrapolation of the results to the value corresponding to zero partial pressure of nitrous oxide. This method has been examined critically, and the value obtained, namely 4850x10
10
c./cm./atm., seems more satisfactory than earlier estimates. The intensity has been correlated with the polar properties of the nitrogen-nitrogen and nitrogen-oxygen links. The general relationship between integrated band area and total pressure has been discussed.
