Abstract
Observations on the
δ
-rays associated with the tracks of singly-charged particles can contribute to the problem of distinguishing particles of different mass. We have therefore determined the distribution of
δ
-rays along tracks of protons brought to rest in photographic emulsions. Using this information, we have determined the relative numbers of protons, deuterons and tritons among the singly-charged particles brought to rest in emulsions exposed to cosmic radiation at high altitudes. Knowledge of the distribution of
δ
-rays on tracks of low-energy protons has two applications to current investigations employing ‘nuclear’ plates: (
a
) in the selection, for calibration purposes, of protons without an admixture of deuterons; and (
b
) in the analysis of real or suspected heavy-meson events.
