Abstract
It is shown that previous measurements on the magnetic susceptibility of oxygen in a clathrate compound can be explained if it is assumed that the molecule, instead of being completely free as previously assumed, is subject to a potential
V

(1 —cos 2
θ
) with
V

/
k
= 32° K.
θ
is the angle between the figure axis of the molecule and the
c
axis of the crystal. The susceptibility measurements were extended down to 0⋅25° K and showed good agreement with the theory.
