Abstract
The structure of the shadow is described. For a shadow close to the flame the temperatures in the flame giving rise to the maximum and the minimum light intensities are calculated. In air of initial temperature 18°C they are 59 and 364°C respectively. For a shadow distant from the flame a new point of reference on the shadowgraph is suggested in the first discontinuous rise in intensity. This is correlated quantitatively with a particular position and temperature in the flame.
