Abstract
The X -ray diffraction ‘spikes’ of diamond can be fully explained as being due to segregated (100) planes of impurity atoms, which fail to reveal themselves in small-angle diffraction because the increases in thickness and in number of electrons are just proportional to each other. The alloying element concerned appears to be silicon.
