The tidal régime of the River Thames; long-term trends and their possible causes

Abstract

Some of the processes responsible for the observed changes in the tidal regime of the River Thames are fairly well established, for example, the general sinking of southeastern England. However, the reason for the relatively large increase in the mean tidal range in the upper estuary is not obvious. Although definitive evidence is lacking, it seems probable that this increase is largely man-made and results primarily from the continual processes of embanking and bank raising.
