Abstract

Harrie Stewart Wilson Massey suffered a long painful illness with great fortitude. Two months before he died he phoned me (D. R. B.) to ask me if I would be responsible for this Memoir. I visited him in his home on 27 September. Telling me he had scarcely bothered with his Personal Record notebook he gave me some papers, said he would get his secretary Mrs Margaret Harding to give me other papers and then talked at length about his life and work. He recommended that I seek help from Sir Robert Boyd, F.R.S., on space research and from D. G. Davis on the development of physics (and astronomy) at University College and on his science policy making activities since they were thoroughly familiar with how he had thought and what he had done in these areas. Sir Robert and Dr Davis are the authors of the sections just indicated.
