Abstract
Rodney Robert Porter was a scientist of outstanding ability and great distinction who has been described as the father of modern immuno- chemistry. As a young man he was so astonished by the biological properties of the immunoglobulins that he devoted the whole of his scientific life with an unwavering intensity to the study of the biochemistry of the immune system. He had the capacity to inspire enormous respect coupled with warm personal feelings in all those with whom he came in contact in his scientific career. Still full of vigour and scientific achievement at the age of 67 he was tragically killed in a road accident on 6 September 1985.
