Abstract
Guy Frederic Marrian was born on 3 March 1904, in London. He was the third child of his mother, Mary Eddington Currie, who had already given birth to two daughters, and the sixth child of his father Frederick York Marrian, who had two sons and a daughter by his first wife, who died. His father, an A.M.I.C.E., was a civil engineer employed by the Great Northern Railway. At the time of Marrian’s birth, his family was in rather straitened circumstances arising from an unwise investment by his father.
