Abstract
Frank Leonard Engledow was born on 20 August 1890 at 8 Etta Street, Deptford, Kent. He was the fifth and youngest child of Henry Engledow and his wife Elizabeth (née Prentice) who were married at All Saints in the parish of Sutton, Surrey, in 1878. Frank’s father was a Norfolk man born at Hilgay where his father was a carpenter, while his mother grew up on Shepherd’s Farm at Hockley in Essex. The couple quite probably met at Putney where Henry was a police sergeant and Elizabeth was in service, though it is not known in what circumstances. Henry rose to the rank of station sergeant on merit and held this position on transfer to Bexleyheath, Kent, and he was offered promotion to inspector which he refused because he considered he lacked the education for the post. It seems that this deficiency deeply concerned Henry and he was very sensitive about his lack of scholarship, which affected him emotionally and doubtless determined the upbringing of the children who were provided with the opportunities that he had lacked.
