Abstract
The ADC nonlinearity is one of the most significant sources of the measurement error of root mean square (RMS) digital measuring instruments. This is because the ADC nonlinearity effect on the final RMS error is difficult to compensate, especially in case of commercial instruments. To describe of ADC nonlinearity, there are a large number of techniques that characterizes some disadvantages, including an overestimation of the error estimate, the complexity of calculating of the error estimate, and the possibility of using only for certain ADC architectures. In this paper, we consider the application of Chebyshev polynomials to describe the ADC nonlinearity and the corresponding estimation of the RMS measurement error for this nonlinearity approximation approach. Analytical relationships have been obtained that make it possible to calculate the RMS measurement error. A method is proposed for assessing the ADC nonlinearity parameters by typical nonlinearity form for the case of considered approach of approximation. A qualitative comparison of the proposed approach with the existing ones (the “worst case” method, polynomial functions application, pseudo-random functions application) from the point of view of the error estimation accuracy and the complexity of error calculation is carried out. The influence of signal parameters and nonlinearity parameters on the RMS error is analyzed.
